PEICPT Joins Atlantic Virtual Care Agreement

Supporting limited virtual physiotherapy across Atlantic Canada

Tuesday, May 5, 2026

PEICPT has signed the Atlantic Virtual Care MOU, allowing certain publicly managed virtual physiotherapy services across Atlantic provinces under specific conditions. The agreement does not permit unrestricted cross-border practice.

The Prince Edward Island College of Physiotherapy (PEICPT) has joined the Atlantic Virtual Care Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), which supports limited virtual physiotherapy services across Atlantic Canada.

Under the agreement, virtual physiotherapy may, in certain situations, be treated as though it occurred in the physiotherapist’s home province when the patient is located in another Atlantic province.

The MOU applies only when:

  • The physiotherapist is physically located in an Atlantic province
  • The patient is physically located in another Atlantic province
  • The care is part of a treatment plan managed by a provincial Health Authority or Crown Corporation

The agreement applies only to publicly managed healthcare services. It does not apply to private virtual physiotherapy or create a general right to practise across provincial borders.

Physiotherapists practising outside the scope of the MOU must continue to meet the registration requirements of the province where the patient is located.

The Registrar has also issued a Practice Advisory: Atlantic Virtual Physiotherapy Under the Inter-Jurisdictional MOU, outlining expectations for physiotherapists providing care under the agreement, including patient communication, privacy protection, professional liability coverage, and emergency planning.

The MOU may affect some temporary or cross-border registration categories. Physiotherapists should review PEICPT guidance to determine whether separate registration remains necessary for their practice.
