The Competency Profile for Canadian PTs is being updated. Physiotherapists and other interest holders are invited to participate in consultation activities. Complete the online Expression of Interest form to get involved or receive updates.
The National Physiotherapy Advisory Group (NPAG) has launched a project to update the Competency Profile for Physiotherapists in Canada, including the essential competencies and entry-to-practice milestones.
The NPAG has selected CAMPROF Canada Inc. to support the project and facilitate consultation and engagement activities with interest holders across the physiotherapy profession and related sectors, broadly including physiotherapists, educators, regulators, accreditation representatives, employers, leaders, and other contributors with insight into physiotherapy practice and entry-to-practice expectations in Canada.
The updated competency profile will continue to support a variety of purposes across Canada, including:
- informing entry-to-practice expectations for physiotherapy practice;
- supporting curriculum development within accredited physiotherapy education programs;
- informing accreditation standards and educational outcomes;
- supporting regulatory and assessment activities;
- guiding the development and review of evaluation and examination resources;
- supporting students and physiotherapists in reflecting on competency development and professional growth.
The update will focus on reviewing and updating the existing competency profile to ensure it reflects contemporary physiotherapy practice, evolving health system contexts, emerging technologies, ethical practice, accessibility, communication, collaboration, and diverse practice environments across Canada.
Consultation activities will include key informant interviews (June – August 2026), targeted consultation activities (September – October 2026), subject matter expert working groups (October – December 2026), and a pan-Canadian validation survey (May - June 2027).
The project will be conducted primarily through virtual engagement activities between September 2026 and May 2027. Recruitment for consultation and working group participation will begin shortly.
Individuals who are interested in participating or who would like to receive additional information about the consultation activities and the Expression of Interest process are invited to complete this online form.
