Updated Information on Diagnostic Imaging Access and X-Ray Ordering
Important guidance for physiotherapists with diagnostic imaging authorization
Friday, January 9, 2026
PEICPT has updated guidance for registrants regarding diagnostic imaging access, PACS setup, X-ray referrals, and responsibilities related to ordering diagnostic images.
Updated Diagnostic Imaging Information for Registrants
PEICPT has updated information for registrants regarding access to diagnostic imaging systems and the ordering of X-rays.
Registrants who have completed a Diagnostic Imaging course should ensure they have submitted their application through the HMS portal under Special Authorizations. Approved names are forwarded monthly to Health PEI.
PACS Access
PACS access requirements vary depending on employment status and existing access:
- Registrants approved for special authorization who do not work for Health PEI must complete all required forms for VPN and PACS access.
- Health PEI employees without PACS access must complete the DIIS and VPN forms.
- Registrants who already have PACS access may begin ordering immediately.
Completed forms should be submitted to pacs_help@ihis.org and copied to the College.
X-Ray Referrals
Health PEI is requesting that physiotherapists use paper referrals for X-ray requisitions. Referrals should include the physiotherapist’s name, licence number, working diagnosis, requested views, relevant clinical information, and contact details.
Clients are responsible for booking their own appointments through Skip the Waiting Room or their local hospital.
Professional Responsibilities
Physiotherapists who order imaging are responsible for reviewing results, communicating findings to clients, and arranging any necessary follow-up or referral.
Registrants without special authorization to order X-rays may still request view-only access to PACS by contacting the Registrar.
